Our intent is to build a staff house - with guest space - that is made from natural, local, sustainable, and recycled materials, as best we can.Scot DeGrafhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16868316899490308855noreply@blogger.comBlogger24125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4421351074642091166.post-60454684058122582252012-07-31T21:48:00.002-04:002012-10-02T11:55:03.764-04:002012: Pond created for animal habitat.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
At the very end of June, we dug a small pond in front of the house. The day we finished digging and placing the pond liner, a huge storm came through and filled it with rain water. In a matter of days, dragonflies, butterflies and a frog were seen around the pond! In less than a week we found about 200 frog eggs suspended in the water. Less than a week after that, we discovered the tiny tadpoles swimming around. Within a month of the digging, we have counted four species of frogs and have seen at least three distinct sets of eggs.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Attention to detail is extremely important in making sure that the roof will remain waterproof.<br />
One small oversight and water will find its way into the house.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The plywood is cleared of nails and swept of dust. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then the waterproof membrane is laid down....very carefully.<br />
It is shingled from the low sections up, overlapping layers at least 3 inches. </div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The curved section is laid down.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The entire roof is now covered with the waterproof membrane.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
All the overlapping seams are sealed.<br />
Note that the waterproof membrane runs up the vertical wall on the right.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
As a cheap, final insurance, a seamless sheet of 6 mil poly is laid down on top.</div>
<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
On top of that, a drainage layer is laid. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This has a filter cloth that keeps soil from clogging things up,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and allows water to travel quickly downhill to drains.</div>
<br />

the drainage layer (closest to you), and a screen poking out of the drainage hole to keep leaves out.</div>

We then hauled (or had others haul) over 400 buckets of compost and topsoil.<br />

Guest room floor, cordwood.In late spring we started the earthen floor in the guest room. We started with about 5 inches of gravel. We leveled that carefully, then added 3 inches of rigid insulation (to keep the cold ground from bleeding into the room.) On top of that, we added another 4 inches of sand, carefully leveling that as well. There will be three layers of clay/sand mix that will constitute the actual floor. The floor will be hardened by applying coats of linseed oil.<br />

One and a half inches of clay, laid down on the sand layer. Further layers to come.<br />

Once the floor hardened<br />
(about six weeks of drying time)<br />
we put up the final small cordwood wall. We had some help from Alexor and Joelle. Here are a few shots of he work. The bright blue you see in the photos is tape to protect the bottle ends while we put them in the wall.<br />

In June we had a workshop with Sigi Koko and put a finish coat on the living room walls...a gold clay over the earthen colored primary coats. Here are photos of the weekend and beyond.</div>

(soldered together at this point) using a crane. Each panel weighs about 125 pounds.<br />

Note that the tanks are lifted off the floor, on insulated stands, keeping the water warmer. <br />
Altogether we'll have 110 gallons of hot water storage.<br />

Here we built an arch over that area, a visual link to the arch in the living room, the arch of the barrel roof, the curve of the entry wall, etc. Note the straw at the top. This is one of the few areas without an initial clay coat yet.<br /><br /></div><br /><br />Now some shots of final coats....<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5236/5830379117_3bcdc9f27c_z.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5236/5830379117_3bcdc9f27c_z.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>Once we detailed the curve of a straw bale wall as we wanted it, we put the final layer on. In this case, we used a white clay that was donated and added fine, sifted sand, wheat paste, and a green pigment. The result does not show well in the photos, but is a wonderful green that stops the flaking sand coming loose from the earlier layers.<br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2780/5830388149_ebb52f6d7a_z.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2780/5830388149_ebb52f6d7a_z.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>Here you see a window in the bedroom with window trim, an oak window seat, and the final plaster coat.<br /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3386/5830391203_4415a570c7_z.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 601px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3386/5830391203_4415a570c7_z.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>A closer shot of a window with a deep, oak window sill. In late fall we began work on a retaining wall, but when winter really set in, we started work -inside - on the masonry stove and the stone bench around it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
First some shots of the stone wall. Solid as can be, but made to appear like dry stack.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5001/5293728728_29dd95969a_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5001/5293728728_29dd95969a_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 299px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 401px;" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5049/5293131689_dd8f906998_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5049/5293131689_dd8f906998_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 300px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5126/5293729192_3104d2b757_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5126/5293729192_3104d2b757_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 300px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are really happy with how it is turning out.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Earlier in 2010 we got a masonry stove kit. Our good friend, Marshall, came down from NH to help Scot put it together. (He was the brains and the muscle of the operation!)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/5078167693_4fc8849c40_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/5078167693_4fc8849c40_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 267px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4129/5078184059_39e1542086_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4129/5078184059_39e1542086_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 267px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a>Scot moved it all inside ahead of time, we put it together 'dry' to make sure there were no surprises, then mortared it all together the next day.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4125/5078801546_7f8f57e0c6_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4125/5078801546_7f8f57e0c6_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 381px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a>Marshall lifts a 125 pound block onto the unit. Easier alone than with Scot 'helping.'<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/5078212987_6fa7ea6a18_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/5078212987_6fa7ea6a18_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 267px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a><br />
<br />
Before it can be fired up, it must be covered with at least 4 inches of brick, stone, clay, or similar material. We will have a mix of cob and stone. What follows are photos of the process for covering the Masonry stove exterior. The stone bench being built below and the cob to follow will provide a warm place to sit around the hearth, and will increase the total weight of the stove - and hence its ability to store heat - to close to 5,000 pounds.<br />
<br />
Cardboard around the stove - seen in photos below - is there to provide an expansion joint between it and the cob that will surround it.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5049/5293731048_50d1035693_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5049/5293731048_50d1035693_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 300px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a>Early December, 2010:<br />
Lots of details work had to be done to get the air intake door set correctly.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5168/5293139391_1ba1917638_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5168/5293139391_1ba1917638_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 300px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Mixing cob with your feet is a lot harder in the winter time!<br />
But the stone started to go up.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5242/5293140159_3a88fef2d4_z.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5242/5293140159_3a88fef2d4_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 300px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a>Around December 23rd:<br />
After about 5 days work for two people, this is what is done on the stone bench.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5129/5343066534_afc8176abf_z.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5129/5343066534_afc8176abf_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 299px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 401px;" /></a>Then the door frame (with painter's tape to keep it clean) was anchored to the core, and cob went up the walls, .....<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5169/5349511661_94d1fd984f_z.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5169/5349511661_94d1fd984f_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 300px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 402px;" /></a>January 2011: The stone bench continues around the back,<br />
with chimney being covered in cob as well. All this mass (4000-5000 pounds) will store heat in the winter, and cool in the summer.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5125/5343074172_c0992e4719_z.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5125/5343074172_c0992e4719_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 537px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 401px;" /></a>The back, clean out door, with a heart shaped stone found in the woods.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Later, additional coats and artistic relief were added.<br />
The stove is a wonder! Two short fires a day keep the whole house VERY warm in winter.<br />
<br />
<br />
AND... as of early December 2010 we now have toilet facilities:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5287/5293729690_45b664bb96_z.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5287/5293729690_45b664bb96_z.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 537px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 401px;" /></a>Upstairs it looks fairly normal except that is has no water tank. This will obviously help with water conservation.<br />

Cob Wall construction<div style="text-align: center;">Cob is a mixture of clay, sand and straw. Worldwide, more homes are built of clay than any other material.<br /><br />June 14, 2010: The floor on the first level is poured. Under the floor is 2.5 inches of rigid insulation that was headed for the landfill. This insulation will allow the floor to store heat in the winter, then radiate it back into the room at night. The floor will also keep the house cooler in summer.<br /><br /><b>June 2010</b>: We began building a 20,000 pound cob wall that, like the floor, will provide thermal mass to store heat in winter, and cool in summer.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><b>July 2010</b> weekend 2010: work continues. Niches and shelf take shape.<br /><br /><b>August 2010</b>: the arches, electric boxes, and more glass go in. It's getting pretty tall.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Sept 2010, Labor Day Weekend</span>. The wall nears the ceiling.<br /></div></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">We will eventually put ceramic tile on the floor, but not for some time. The following photos illustrate the cob wall being built, curving out into this room, creating a sun room by the entry door. Most recent photos of cob work are at the end of this series, oldest first.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Click on any photo to enlarge.</span><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1284/4704363547_94abaedf91.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Recycled vinyl roof shingles installed.Linda's and my good friend, Marshall Hatch, arrived from NH on Saturday afternoon, November 14. David King came out for the day on Sunday and the four of us spent the day getting the staging set. We needed to get a heavy platform up on the south side, scaffolds on the north, and Marshall's million and one tools (not to mention the nearly 70 bundles of shingles) up onto the west roof. We had some issues with power and rain, but Marshall is never one to slow down, so things were always proceeding. He worked many nights using only a headlamp to keep things moving.<br /><br />The shingles are made of 80% post-consumer vinyl and are warranted to last 50 years.<br /><br /><span style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold">Click on any image below to enlarge it a bit.</span><br /><br /><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2578/4114799697_68f81a5573_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 326px; CURSOR: pointer; HEIGHT: 216px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2578/4114799697_68f81a5573_b.jpg" border="0" /></a>David braces the ladder for Marshall as he takes the platform up.<br /></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2580/4115585652_2921941295.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 325px; CURSOR: pointer; HEIGHT: 217px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2580/4115585652_2921941295.jpg" border="0" /></a>David and Marshall set the other end of the platform.<br /></div><span style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><br /></span><span style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline"><br /></span><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2698/4114744343_584df48d2a.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 325px; CURSOR: pointer; HEIGHT: 217px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2698/4114744343_584df48d2a.jpg" border="0" /></a>Marshall adjusts the platform. We are trying to use as little concrete as possible since it creates so much CO2, a major global warming gas. On top of the gravel we built a frame (see above with Linda in the house) to create a small grade beam (see beam below) to take the full weight of this section of the house.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3132/2918720329_d73a316e9a.jpg?v=0"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3132/2918720329_d73a316e9a.jpg?v=0" border="0" /></a>The grade beam (above) is concrete, reinforced with rebar. We had to use some concrete to pass code and hold the house up. On top of the grade beam we will place standard block (piled in photo above) to make a small basement.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3204/2919562446_f27502a480.jpg?v=0"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: pointer; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3204/2919562446_f27502a480.jpg?v=0" border="0" /></a>In the picture above, longtime Charles Town resident and foundation foreman, John Edmonson lays block.
